Reba McEntire joined forces with Carole King to create the theme song for her new sitcom, Happy Place.
In an interview with USA TODAY published on Thursday, October 10, the 69-year-old country star shared insights about the track’s creation and her reunion with the 82-year-old legend known for “You’ve Got a Friend.” McEntire explained, “I emailed her and told her the situation. She said that she’d love to help out.”
Although the pair are “friends,” McEntire acknowledged that she hadn’t seen King in about four years.
The “Fancy” artist and the “Where You Lead” singer met in Los Angeles at King’s daughter Sherry Kondor’s home to write the song together. McEntire shared, “I had the beginning and a chorus, but mainly the melody. Then [King] came in and wrote the lyrics and added a melody. I said, ‘Carole, I really love my melody, and I love your lyrics.’ So she said, ‘Throw them together.'”
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE back in May, McEntire revealed that she would be performing the theme song for Happy Place. “Oh, definitely. I’ll be singing the theme song. We’ve started working on it, and we’ll have it finished soon,” she stated. “If they say it’s a go, I’ll wrap it up and have it ready when we start the series.”
McEntire previously performed the theme song for Reba, a reworked version of her 2001 single “I’m a Survivor,” which has gone viral on social media multiple times and continues to be a highlight of her concerts. During the conversation, she mentioned that reuniting with her former Reba co-star Melissa Peterman for the show has been “so much fun.”
“My boyfriend Rex Linn is also part of the show. We have a fantastic ensemble with the same producers, showrunner, and writers as we did on the Reba show, and the script is great,” McEntire said.
She then shared some details about the series’ plot, explaining, “My character Bobbie’s dad was named Happy, and we owned a tavern called Happy’s Place. Well, Happy has passed away, so he’s passed the tavern onto me, but there’s a little hiccup involved, which creates the mystery. Everyone will have to tune in to see, and I hope they love it.”
