In an exclusive chat with PEOPLE, the country singer also shared her interest in collaborating musically with Tate McRae.
Megan Moroney has had her hands full lately — from taking part in this year’s CMA Fest to unveiling her second capsule collection with Boys Lie on June 10.
Now, the 27-year-old country artist is shifting her focus to what’s next, including new music and dream collaborations. Following the success of her 2023 album Am I Okay?, Moroney is back in the studio crafting her next record.
“I’m definitely in album mode right now,” she shared with PEOPLE. “I’m giving myself a little more time to keep writing, but this one already feels a bit lighter and more carefree than the last.”
Though she’s sticking with her longtime producer and many of the same songwriters, Moroney says the creative process has taken on a new energy. “I’m always looking to evolve. I never want to repeat myself. It’s about figuring out what’s fresh, what still feels like me, and where I can push things.”
As for the sound? “It’s the most ‘me’ I’ve ever felt on a record,” the “No Caller ID” singer added.
With her sound evolving, Moroney’s thinking about future collaborations too — and she’s got some pop powerhouses in mind. Olivia Rodrigo tops her wish list.
“When I’m sad, I listen to her music,” Moroney said. “If we worked together, I imagine it would be something emotional and a little angry — and I think we’d nail it.”
She’s also eyeing a more upbeat partnership with Tate McRae, with whom she once performed “Tennessee Orange” live. “I really admire both of them,” she said of Rodrigo and McRae. “We’ve had a chance to hang out briefly, and I just think we could make something really cool happen.”
Another artist on her dream list? Ed Sheeran.
After joining Sheeran on stage at Nashville’s iconic Bluebird Café in March, Moroney walked away even more impressed. “It was inspiring to see someone at that level who still just loves great songs,” she said. “Watching him react to new music with so much excitement — that really stayed with me.”
