Lionel Richie Expresses Apologies to Fans During Madison Square Garden Makeup Show

During his rescheduled performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Monday night (August 14), Lionel Richie extended his heartfelt apologies to his fans. The makeup show came after the original date of the performance was canceled just one hour after its scheduled start time.

Attributing the cancellation to unfavorable weather conditions that prevented his plane from landing in the New York vicinity, Richie revealed that he took extraordinary measures, including a somewhat unconventional approach, to ensure his presence at the venue.

“I attempted to bribe the pilot,” shared the singer with his audience on Monday night, as captured in a fan-recorded video circulating on social media.

“He responded, ‘I do want to see my wife tomorrow.’ Therefore, tonight, we are going to compensate for that. I offer my sincere apologies for that incident a thousand times over,” Richie continued to express.

Richie’s abrupt cancellation on Saturday night (August 12) left numerous fans feeling disappointed and frustrated, particularly those who couldn’t attend the rescheduled performance.

One fan took to Twitter, sharing their perspective: “Traveled from NC to NYC for the weekend. Spent money on hotel, flights, Ubers, dinner… This costs me around $4000 and now it’s a disappointment. Some of us can’t make it on Monday and are now stuck.”

However, during his makeup performance, Richie addressed the situation from the stage, emphasizing that the decision to cancel was ultimately beyond his control. He humorously stated, “I had two ‘nos’ come at the same time. And when those two ‘nos’ coincide — when God says ‘no’ and when the pilot says ‘no’ — the answer…”

Lionel Richie’s Madison Square Garden concert was originally part of his 2023 tour alongside Earth, Wind & Fire. The latter also took the stage during the rescheduled show on Monday night.
