Kelsea Ballerini has shown support for fellow country artist Ashley Cooke’s new breakup song.
Cooke, 28, teased the track on Instagram on Monday, Feb. 9, sharing a clip of herself playing guitar and singing about troubled relationships. Lyrics include:
“Whiskey nights wandering eyes make messes / Hiding phones, ‘I don’t knows’ make questions / Towns talk and the truth starts spreading / Don’t you know crossing lines makes exes.”
Cooke continues, “Don’t deny I know you did it / It doesn’t matter how you spin it. Want me back after that? Forget it / Don’t you know crossing lines makes exes.”
Ballerini, 32, responded in the comments with, “mmmhhhmmm,” to which Cooke replied, “@kelseaballerini you get it.”
The exchange comes just days after PEOPLE confirmed that Ballerini and her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Outer Banks actor Chase Stokes, 33, had split once more. A source said the couple still love each other but are at different points in their lives, making it difficult to figure out where to live and how to merge their lives.
Another insider added that Ballerini has been supportive throughout the relationship, but Stokes hasn’t always reciprocated, especially as her career has grown, creating tension and insecurity on his end.
Ballerini and Stokes went public with their romance at the April 2023 CMT Awards. After nearly three years together, they broke up in September, briefly reconciled in Europe, and confirmed their relationship again on New Year’s Eve. Ballerini reflected on their turbulent year in an Instagram post, calling it “messy for the heart” and acknowledging the challenges they faced publicly.
