Throughout her legendary career, Dolly Parton has seen 25 of her songs reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, but one stands out as the most personal to her.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, the 78-year-old singer-songwriter was asked to name the song she’s most proud of, and her answer may surprise fans.
“Well, I’m proud of all of them,” Parton shared. “I think the one that’s most personal to me is the little ‘Coat of Many Colors,’ because it talks about my mom, my parents, and kind of gives you an insight. It also covers bullying, acceptance, and all that.”
Coat of Many Colors,” released in September 1971, was inspired by Parton’s childhood experience when her mother made her a coat from rags to wear. Parton has often shared how deeply personal the song is to her.
While she holds many of her songs dear, Parton also acknowledged others that have had significant impact. “Of course, the one that’s most recorded is ‘Jolene.’ That seems to be the favorite,” she said. “Do you know that song has been recorded, somebody told me, 450 times in the last 52 years? I’m so proud of it.”
She also expressed pride in her iconic ballad, saying, “‘I Will Always Love You’ is one of the great love songs, so I’m very proud of that too.”
In the same interview, Parton addressed the long-standing rumor that she wrote both “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” on the same day.
“I don’t know if I wrote them on the same day,” she clarified. “But they were found on the same cassette, and so I wrote them during that period of time.”
Parton also shared her thoughts on the future of her career, explaining why retirement isn’t on her horizon. “I can’t retire,” she said, emphasizing her passion for music and the work that continues to drive her.
