Ash Santos told PEOPLE that many people working on the set of Marshals were deeply disappointed after Garrett — the character portrayed by Riley Green — was killed off in episode 11.
Riley Green left a lasting impression on the cast and crew of Marshals during his time on the show.
The 37-year-old country star made his acting debut in the Yellowstone spinoff, portraying Garrett — a former Navy SEAL and longtime teammate of Kayce, played by Luke Grimes, and Cal, portrayed by Logan Marshall-Green. Garrett unexpectedly remained in Montana after arriving at East Camp and eventually developed a romance with Andrea, played by Ash Santos.
However, Garrett’s storyline came to an end when the character died following a barn fire on Kayce’s ranch.
Speaking with PEOPLE, Santos, 32, revealed that although she knew Garrett’s storyline would eventually end, Green had hoped to stay on the series longer than originally planned.
“He joked about wanting to stick around for more episodes,” Santos shared. “We teased him because his music schedule already keeps him constantly traveling for concerts.”
Green’s departure reportedly hit the production team hard, especially members of the hair and makeup department, who had become very fond of him.
“The crew was genuinely upset,” Santos said, adding that some staff members stayed frustrated with showrunner Spencer Hudnut for weeks after learning Garrett would be killed off.
According to Santos, Green adapted naturally to acting despite it being his first major television role. She explained that his experience as a musician likely helped him step comfortably into storytelling on screen.
“When you’re an artist, creativity already comes naturally,” Santos explained. “And as a singer, you’re constantly telling stories through music, so the transition felt easy for him.”
She added that Green’s talent and personality quickly became obvious while filming.
“He has a really natural presence on screen,” Santos said. “And beyond that, he was just incredibly fun to work with.”
