“I never want to repeat myself.”
Less than a year after releasing his Leather Deluxe project, Cody Johnson is already looking ahead. The Texas native has confirmed that he’s deep into his next project, teasing that fans will get to hear a “spicier” side of him this time around.
Johnson’s past music has explored themes of love, relationships, and life in Texas. While he doesn’t plan to stray too far from the sound that resonates with both him and his audience, he admitted he feels motivated to raise the bar creatively—this time with tracks that lean into a slightly bolder, steamier edge.
“I don’t want to go off the beaten path,” he explained in an interview with Everything Nash. “But I do want to do something just a little bit spicier. You hit a home run, and next time you’re up to bat, people expect another one. I feel that pressure—and it’s a good pressure. It’s a privilege to be in a place where I have that chance to really knock it out of the park again.”
The country star also revealed that new music was already in motion even before Leather Deluxe officially dropped. Jumping quickly into the next project, he said, gives him the breathing room to experiment and refine his vision without being confined to deadlines.
“I like to stay ahead of things. I can’t stand when work feels chaotic or rushed,” Johnson admitted. “I hate putting a date on something and then scrambling to make it. I prefer structure and organization—but with live music and this business, you’ve got to roll with the punches. Sometimes things just happen.”
Cody Johnson is taking a deliberate approach with his next project, making sure every element—from the visuals to the overarching concept—feels intentional before sharing too many details with fans.
“I’ve still got some work to finish up on this record before the end of the year,” Johnson revealed. “I don’t want to give too much away yet, because I’m still playing around with the artwork, the photography, and the overall theme. One thing’s for sure—I don’t ever want to do the same thing twice.”
He went on to hint that new music is just around the corner: “I’d say next year, you can expect something.”
This update comes on the heels of a major career milestone: Johnson recently celebrated his No. 1 single with Carrie Underwood, “I’m Gonna Love You,” featured on Leather Deluxe. The expanded edition also includes standout tracks like “The Fall,” “How Do You Sleep at Night,” “C’mon Cowgirl,” and “Take It Like a Man.”
