The song that helped define Underwood’s career appeared on her debut album, Some Hearts, released in November 2005.

“Before He Cheats” has become one of the most recognizable songs of Carrie Underwood’s career, but the singer admits she once questioned whether its bold tone would resonate with listeners.
While reflecting on the song during a November 2025 appearance at the Nashville press line for American Idol Season 9, Underwood, now 42, explained that there were early concerns about how forceful the track felt. At the time, she said, she was known to audiences as a wholesome, small-town girl from her Idol days, and she worried the song’s attitude might clash with that image. There was even brief discussion about whether the song should be recorded at all.
Ultimately, the hesitation didn’t last long. Underwood said the response to the track was overwhelmingly positive, leading her team to move forward with it — a decision that clearly paid off. Two decades later, she noted, the song is still frequently performed and continues to be a highlight for fans.
“Before He Cheats” first appeared on Underwood’s debut album, Some Hearts, released in November 2005, before being reissued as a single in 2006. That release helped propel both the song and the singer to worldwide fame that has endured ever since.
Underwood continues to see the track’s lasting influence in unexpected ways, even at home. She recently recalled overhearing music while cleaning her house, only to discover her six-year-old son watching the “Before He Cheats” music video in her bedroom. She joked that his curiosity quickly led him to explore more of her older videos.
Looking back on her journey — from winning American Idol Season 4 to later returning to the show as a judge — Underwood said it’s still difficult for her to fully grasp the level of success she’s achieved. She shared that she feels deeply grateful for the long-standing support from fans and often becomes emotional when reflecting on it.
The singer added that revisiting her past catalog has been especially enjoyable lately. She’s begun incorporating older songs into recent live shows and says both she and her audiences are enjoying the experience.
Although fans may recognize the same person they fell in love with years ago, Underwood believes she has continued to grow. She explained that her voice, songwriting, musicianship, and stage presence have all evolved over time, leaving her feeling more confident and fulfilled at this stage of her life and career.
