Tim McGraw Admits He Nearly Walked Away from Music Amid Severe Health Struggles
During a recent stop on his tour in Highland, California, Tim McGraw got candid with fans about his battle with health issues — revealing that his struggles once made him seriously consider retiring from music.
As reported by the New York Post, the country superstar told the audience at the Yaamava’ Theater that over the past two years, he’s undergone four major back surgeries and a double knee replacement. Although McGraw has mentioned his procedures before, fans were unaware of just how much they took a toll on him — both physically and mentally.
The 57-year-old singer admitted that during his toughest moments, he felt uncertain about whether he could continue performing. “After dealing with all that for a couple of years, I got really down about it — things weren’t going right,” McGraw told the crowd. “This past spring, before my final back surgery, it got really bad. I started thinking seriously about how to walk away. I didn’t want to, but I didn’t think it would ever get better.”
He then took a moment to acknowledge the surgeon who played a crucial role in his recovery. “The doctor who did my double knee replacement is here tonight,” McGraw said, introducing Dr. Chen to the audience, who responded with cheers and applause.
McGraw also revealed that his wife, Faith Hill, has been facing her own health challenges. “She’s had quite a few surgeries lately — five on her neck and a couple on her hands,” he said, before recognizing her hand surgeon, Dr. Rose, who was also in attendance.
The “Live Like You Were Dying” singer said it meant a lot to honor the doctors who helped both him and Hill regain their health. But beyond gratitude, McGraw said he wanted to share a message of hope.
Through extensive physical therapy, McGraw gradually regained strength and mobility. Though his recovery forced him to cancel a few appearances, he said the process inspired his latest song, “King Rodeo.” He debuted a live version earlier this year at the inaugural Music City Rodeo.
“My health has improved,” McGraw shared. “And through that process, I came up with this song about facing age and everything that comes with it.”
The emotional track reflects on the highs and lows of fame and the personal battles he’s faced in recent years. In the song, he sings:
