Ricky Skaggs Returns with First New Release in Over 10 Years, Sharing the Message Behind “Say A Prayer”
Country Music Hall of Fame member Ricky Skaggs has made his return with “Say A Prayer,” his first new release in more than a decade.
Released through Skaggs Family Records and distributed by Virgin Music Group, the song was written by Gordon Kennedy and Ben Cooper as a response to the hardships and challenges affecting people around the world. The track focuses on themes of hope, spirituality, reflection and unity.
Before the song’s release, Skaggs discussed its story with Country Now backstage at CMA Fest, where he performed “From Now On” with Carly Pearce and Molly Tuttle at Nissan Stadium. Before stepping on stage, the 15-time Grammy winner revealed that he had actually recorded “Say A Prayer” more than 15 years ago and originally planned to include it on his 2010 album Mosaic.
Skaggs explained that the song was recorded during the final stages of the gospel project but ultimately was left off the album because it did not feel like the right fit at the time. The track remained unreleased for years before finding its moment now.
The eight-time CMA Award winner said the current state of the world played a major role in his decision to finally share the song. He felt its message about conflict, greed and the importance of faith was especially meaningful during today’s difficult times.
In discussing the song, Skaggs said it reflects the contrast between people chasing success and those who remain humble, while emphasizing the belief that prayers are always heard.
In a statement about the release, Skaggs described “Say A Prayer” as a song that acknowledges the sadness and struggles many people are experiencing, offering a reminder for listeners to pause, seek faith and come together.
Musically, the track combines elements of country, bluegrass and rock, featuring instruments such as sitar, fiddle, mandolin and banjo. The recording also includes background vocals from Skaggs’ daughter, Molly.
Skaggs praised the song as a strong composition and performance, saying it was a special piece to finally share with audiences.
The release arrives during an active period for the legendary musician. Along with his own headlining performances, Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder are appearing with Dierks Bentley during select dates of the Off The Map Tour. He is also scheduled to return to Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium on July 21 for the final night of the Bluegrass Nights at the Ryman series.
