Megan Moroney attributes Kacey Musgraves as the inspiration behind her desire to pursue songwriting.

Megan Moroney had a significant full-circle moment when her latest album, Am I Okay?, became the third-largest debut from a female country artist in 2024. This achievement placed her right behind Beyoncé and Kacey Musgraves, the latter of whom inspired Moroney to begin her songwriting journey over a decade ago.
Megan Moroney was a high school freshman when Kacey Musgraves released her debut album, Same Trailer, Different Park. Tracks like “Merry Go ‘Round” inspired Moroney to transform her own experiences into songs. For the Georgia native, seeing her music placed alongside Musgraves’ is truly surreal.
“Anything with Kacey’s name on it blows my mind because she’s the reason I started writing songs,” Moroney told NME. “She’s such a brilliant songwriter, and I fell in love with her debut album.”
In February 2024, the singer of “Indifferent” shared a nostalgic, blurry photo of herself with Kacey Musgraves on Instagram to celebrate Musgraves’ recognition in the “Unbroken Circle” section of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s annual exhibit, American Currents: State of the Music. The “Unbroken Circle” section showcases the meaningful connections between artists and those who have had a significant influence on their careers, and it was fitting that Moroney was featured alongside Musgraves.
A selection of important items were showcased to highlight Moroney’s rapid rise to fame, including wardrobe pieces from her “Tennessee Orange” music video, the boots she wore during her Grand Ole Opry debut (with spray tan marks, as she humorously pointed out), Kacey Musgraves’ “Pageant Material” tiara and sash, and more.
Moroney shared her first visit to the “Unbroken Circle” section on social media with a post featuring a slideshow of images, including her throwback photo with Musgraves.
Her caption read, “Thank you @countrymusichof for including me in the American Currents: State of the Music exhibit! I’m truly honored, and it’s open now, so y’all go check it out!! (The second photo was 10 years ago… don’t give up 🥹❤️).”
