Maren Morris Claims She No Longer Needs to Shield Anyone with the Emotional ‘New Chapter’ in Her Music

The Grammy-winning artist’s latest EP, Intermission, follows her divorce from former husband Ryan Hurd and represents a shift away from traditional country music elements.
Maren Morris is embracing a fresh start.
In an Instagram video posted on July 29, the Grammy winner discussed the significance of her forthcoming EP, Intermission. The release follows significant personal and professional changes in her life.
Morris explained, “Naming this project Intermission was deliberate. It’s not just a lyric from the song ‘Cut!’ but also a hint that there’s more to come.” She highlighted the lead single featuring Julia Michaels.
Describing the EP as a “break in the act,” Morris sees it as a pivotal moment and a new chapter in her life. “I’m excited to turn the page and see what’s next,” she shared. “I’m incredibly proud of this music. It was challenging to write because I’m navigating a lot right now, and this EP is a reflection of that.”
Morris added, “But it’s also, like, the most fun music as well as the most heartbreaking because i’m allowing myself to go there — ’cause I don’t have to protect anyone anymore. It’s just about my feelings. So, I hope you love it.”

Earlier this month, Morris gave a preview of her EP with the release of the single “I Hope I Never Fall in Love,” which reflects her wish to stay single after a difficult breakup. This track followed “Cut!,” released in June, which explores the contrast between outward appearances and inner emotional struggles.
Additionally, last month Morris publicly came out as bisexual in a joyful social media post. She shared photos of herself with Pride flags from her RSVP Redux Tour stop in Phoenix, captioning them, “Happy to be the B in LGBTQ+,” and adding, “Happy Pride.”
Before openly discussing the changes in her personal life, Morris had told the Los Angeles Times in September 2023 that she was considering “taking a step back” from the country music scene, feeling “very, very distanced” from the industry’s politics and its figures.
However, two months later, Morris clarified to Variety that she has no intention of leaving country music. “I’m not going anywhere. I love living in Nashville, and I don’t see myself as an outsider to country music,” she stated. “There are so many incredible people here creating meaningful music. I’m part of this community, and I aim to contribute positively both to the town and the music industry.”
