Luke Combs Picked A Cappella Singing Instead of Joining a Fraternity in College: ‘I Had Solos, Man’

Luke Combs took an unexpected path during his college years.
In the July 31 episode of The Dog Walk with Eddie podcast, the 35-year-old country singer shared that he opted to join an a cappella group instead of pledging a fraternity.
Combs revealed that he initially rushed Kappa Alpha Order but ran into a scheduling issue when it was time to commit.
Luke Combs made a surprising choice during his college days, opting for a cappella over fraternity life.
On the July 31 episode of The Dog Walk with Eddie podcast, the 35-year-old country star reflected on his decision to leave behind fraternity pledging in favor of performing with an a cappella group.
Combs explained that he had rushed Kappa Alpha Order but hit a scheduling conflict when the fraternity’s Big Brother reveal night coincided with an a cappella concert.
“That night, we had a show for the a cappella group at the exact same time as the Big Brother event,” Combs recalled.
By then, he was already feeling disenchanted with the pledging process. “I was kind of over it,” he admitted. The reveal event, in particular, didn’t sit right with him. “What is this—like, we’re 10 years old or something? I’m not into that.”
He went on to say, “Let’s be honest—most people join a frat to party and meet girls. That’s the main goal, right? But I told the guys, ‘Look, I’ve got this concert tonight. It’s not like there’s a huge number of us—there’s only about 12 people in the group. I’ve got solos. I can’t just skip it.’”
Faced with an ultimatum from the fraternity to choose one or the other, Combs didn’t hesitate. “I said, ‘Well, I’m going to the concert then. I’m out,’” he recalled.
Looking back, the Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma singer believes he made the right call. “Obviously, it turned out for the best,” he said. However, he added that he would’ve liked to do both. “What bothered me was being forced to pick. There wasn’t any flexibility.”
Combs continued, “I was already singing and knew I was good at it. With the fraternity, I was just paying money to be friends with people—and I already had plenty of friends. It just didn’t feel right.”
Despite the choice, there’s no bitterness. “No hard feelings at all,” Combs said.
Recently, Combs had an emotional moment on stage during his July 26 set at Newport Folk Festival. In a video posted on TikTok, he became visibly emotional while performing “Whoever You Turn Out To Be,” a heartfelt song about watching your children grow. He teared up singing the line, “But you ain’t gotta change the world to make your daddy proud.”
