Luke Bryan is opening up about the impact of losing American Idol season 19 runner-up Willie Spence, who tragically died in a car accident in Tennessee in 2022 at the age of 23.
Speaking to Billboard ahead of the upcoming season 24 of American Idol, the 49-year-old country star recalled how Spence’s death affected him personally. The conversation arose when the outlet asked Bryan, fellow judges Carrie Underwood and Lionel Richie, and host Ryan Seacrest about moments they wished they could change during their time on the show.
“The first thing that came to mind was how I wish I had cherished more moments with Willie Spence,” Bryan said. “Losing him hit me hard, knowing how much he touched me in that room, performing week after week. Watching him was truly breathtaking. He was from Douglas, Georgia—just an hour from my hometown.”
Bryan continued, “That loss really affected me. Sometimes I see clips of him singing, and it breaks my heart for him and his family. I can only imagine what his career might have been.”
Ryan Seacrest added, “You don’t expect those things to happen.”
Bryan reflected further, comparing the loss to seeing missing classmates at a high school reunion. “Considering the years we’ve been on the show, the reality is we are going to lose people,” he explained. Seacrest noted, “When you’ve been part of something with that much history and touched so many lives, you don’t think about it at first—but it’s inevitably part of life.”
Willie Spence died after crashing his car into a semi-truck in Jasper, Tennessee, on October 11, 2022. Spence had finished as the runner-up to Chayce Beckham and had impressed the judges from his very first audition with a rendition of Rihanna’s “Diamonds.”
At the time of his passing, American Idol released a statement: “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved American Idol family member, Willie Spence. He was a true talent who lit up every room he entered and will be deeply missed. Our condolences go out to his loved ones.”
