Cody Johnson Honored With ACM Spirit Award, Celebrated by Luke Bryan Tribute
Cody Johnson received a career milestone on Wednesday night at the 18th ACM Honors in Nashville, where he was presented with the prestigious ACM Spirit Award. Before accepting the honor, Johnson was saluted by his friend, golf partner, and fellow country star Luke Bryan.
Bryan took the stage to deliver a rendition of Johnson’s No. 1 single “’Til You Can’t.” His performance earned a standing ovation from a crowd filled with peers, industry leaders, and fans. Laughing afterward, Bryan joked, “I’m pretty sure that just took years off my life — and I even dropped it a half step,” referring to the song’s high notes.
Turning serious, Bryan praised Johnson’s artistry: “Cody is an incredible artist and performer who always gives everything he has on stage. I’ve watched him inspire people all across the country — uplifting America, our soldiers, and their families. I sometimes wonder how he doesn’t blow out his voice doing it, but he never does. Cody, I’m proud to call you a friend, and it’s my honor to present you with the ACM Spirit Award.”
Taking the stage, Johnson accepted the award — one inspired by the late Merle Haggard, a 20-time ACM winner. The accolade honors artists who forge their own path, write meaningful songs, and embody Haggard’s legacy through authentic performances and storytelling.
“First and foremost, I want to thank my Lord and Savior for giving me this opportunity,” Johnson began, before reflecting on his path to success.
A video package shown prior to his award highlighted his journey, which Johnson admitted brought back strong emotions. “It showed how the odds were always stacked against me. When I learned this award was tied to Merle Haggard, I immediately teared up. Merle has always been one of my heroes. He did things his way, and to be recognized for carrying that same spirit means the world to me.”
Staying true to himself has been central to Johnson’s career. Before signing with a major label, he built his following independently, playing small bars and venues across Texas. When record deals came along, he turned down numerous offers that didn’t align with his values.
“I was told so many times I’d never fill those rooms, that it couldn’t happen for me,” he recalled. “I rejected deal after deal because they required me to compromise the integrity of my music. I wouldn’t do it. What you see on social media or when you come to my shows — that’s me, unrehearsed and real. I’m just grateful I get to do what I love every single night.”
