The actress revealed, “I have felt confined by my own body.”
Kimberly Williams-Paisley, actress and spouse of country music icon Brad Paisley, has opened up about facing a personal challenge. In a recent social media update, the actress, best-selling author, and entrepreneur provided an uplifting and candid health update.
Williams-Paisley recounts an “embarrassing and frightening” incident that occurred nearly two years ago during an Alzheimer’s event in Nashville, where she lost her voice on stage and it did not fully recover. After enduring a couple of “difficult years,” she has now received answers and is on the path to healing.
She explained, “I have damage to my laryngeal nerve. I tried everything to fix it (so thank you, but please no more tips!). I was finally able to undergo surgery this week at @vanderbilthealth with skilled surgeons, and it’s improving a lot! I have a cool scar that’s proudly visible on my neck,” sharing a photo from the hospital and a close-up of her scar from the procedure.
During this challenging period, Williams-Paisley admits she has been hesitant to disclose much publicly, as it felt too personal. This journey has made her appreciate the simple things, like her ability to “use my voice,” whether for her career, a cause, humor, self-expression, or just at a lively dinner party. Instead of being able to speak freely, she describes herself as “the quietest person in the room.”
She added, “I’ve felt subdued. New acquaintances might have seen me as shy or reserved. I’ve felt trapped within myself.” She has experienced shame, self-loathing, and tried various forms of therapy, breathing techniques, and other treatments. Despite the struggles, she has met many supportive individuals who have become dear friends, and she feels immensely thankful.
Williams-Paisley provided further details about the surgery, explaining, “I was awake during the three-hour laryngoplasty, which was done to enhance my paralyzed vocal cord so it could contact the other one. I’m thrilled not to be doing all the work alone anymore; I was completely exhausted. I watched much of the procedure on a video screen above me, and I can only say that MODERN MEDICINE IS AMAZING.”
In her post’s conclusion, Williams-Paisley reflected on the light she has found amid the two-year struggle. She shared that she has “found power” by discovering new ways to use her voice, addressing old wounds, and emerging as a healthier version of herself.
She noted, “I’ve discovered the strength and beauty of silence. I’ve become dedicated to meditation, am deadlifting over a hundred pounds, and am taking better care of my body. I’m managing stress, shedding shame, and feeling more complete, empowered, and joyful. As I learned from a recent @katecbowler podcast, if you’re going through hell, don’t come out empty-handed. Was losing my voice worth it? Not exactly. Was it worthless? Not for a second.”
