Kelsea Ballerini is making it clear that she has Stella Lefty’s back.
After the Grand Ole Opry posted a video showing Lefty singing her breakout song “Boston” with two young St. Jude patients backstage, the 24-year-old singer faced a wave of criticism online. The moment came on the same night Lefty made her debut at the legendary Nashville venue.
Some commenters questioned whether Lefty had earned her place on the Opry stage, with others pointing to her wealthy family background and the ongoing discussion surrounding similarities between “Boston” and Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season.”
One commenter mocked the singer’s rise by suggesting that her billionaire father helped secure her opportunity at the Opry, while another criticized her over the songwriting controversy involving Kahan.
Ballerini, who is an Opry member herself, noticed the comments and stepped in to defend the rising country artist.
In her response, the “Peter Pan” singer acknowledged the importance of preserving the Opry’s history while arguing that the institution should also make room for artists from different generations, backgrounds and musical perspectives.
Ballerini emphasized that country music has always evolved and that artists should be able to connect with audiences in their own ways. She also described the backstage video as a beautiful moment and urged commenters to show more respect toward the people the Opry welcomes onto its stage.
Her message was ultimately a call for fans to appreciate the genre in all its forms rather than attacking artists whose paths into country music may look different from their own.
