Jillian Cardarelli has always considered Vince Gill a friend.

“I first met Vince through a mutual friend who does a lot for charity golf in the Tennessee area,” Cardarelli, 31, tells PEOPLE. “So we got to know each other through him and got to play golf together quite a few times and just had a friendship through golf.”

But when the two met off the course and joined forces on stage as part of a charity event, the idea of making music together began to take off.
