Jelly Roll made another appearance as a guest host on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week, marking his second time stepping into the role. Filling in for Jimmy Kimmel, the country star kicked off the episode by poking fun at his past, his major weight-loss transformation and his friendship with the longtime late-night host.
Jelly Roll wasted no time making the audience laugh, joking about his return to the hosting chair by comparing it to an unexpected second trip to prison.
“This is my second year filling in here,” he told the crowd, before joking that he never expected to find himself back in the host’s seat. Despite the comparison, he made it clear that he genuinely enjoys the experience, while playfully wondering whether the show’s staff would make it through another week with him.
The appearance also gave Jelly Roll an unusual first: wearing a suit and tie. He revealed that he had never dressed that formally before, not even for major occasions such as the Grammys, court appearances or his father’s funeral.
The singer joked about discovering that formal clothing could apparently be purchased at Bass Pro Shops, adding that he chose to wear the outfit as a gesture of respect for his friend Kimmel.
Jelly Roll also continued his self-deprecating humor by addressing his dramatic physical transformation and the hundreds of pounds he has lost. He mixed those jokes with a few playful political jabs, including comments about President Donald Trump taking on hosting duties at an IndyCar event.
Later in the episode, Jelly Roll turned the spotlight toward his own celebrity image. He introduced a segment filmed along Hollywood Boulevard, where a camera crew approached unsuspecting pedestrians and asked them for their opinions about the singer.
The twist was that the people being interviewed had no idea Jelly Roll himself was nearby. After hearing their responses, he surprised them by appearing during the interviews.
Jelly Roll explained that living in the public eye has taught him that people can have very different opinions about him. Rather than avoiding those opinions, he said he was genuinely curious to hear what strangers had to say, which inspired the hidden-surprise segment.
