Jason Aldean gave fans a night to remember during his headlining performance at CMA Fest 2025, pulling off a major surprise by welcoming country legend Travis Tritt to the stage at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium on Thursday, June 5. Viewers were able to relive the unforgettable moment during the three-hour CMA Fest presented by SoFi special that aired on ABC.
Closing out the night as the festival’s final act, Aldean delivered a high-energy set packed with fan favorites like “Hicktown,” “Dirt Road Anthem,” “My Kinda Party,” and his chart-topping single, “Whiskey Drink.” But it was his final number that brought the crowd to a roar.
Before launching into the last song, Aldean teased the moment by introducing it as a track that wasn’t one of his own, but rather a timeless hit by one of his musical idols. “This next guy’s from Georgia,” he said. “And 25 years ago, he had a number-one hit…we’re going to play it for you, and if you know it, sing along.”
With his guitar in hand, Aldean kicked off the opening lines of “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive,” the iconic anthem originally made famous by Travis Tritt. After finishing the first chorus, he turned to the crowd and urged, “Make some noise,” before bringing out Tritt himself to join in on the celebration.
As Travis Tritt stepped onto the stage, the energy inside Nissan Stadium surged. The two Georgia-born stars united on the uplifting classic, taking turns singing and playing side by side as fans joined in with every lyric—creating one of the most memorable moments of CMA Fest’s opening night.
Together with the roaring crowd, they sang:
“And it’s a great day to be alive / I know the sun’s still shining / When I close my eyes / There’s some hard times in the neighborhood / But why can’t every day be just this good.”
Reflecting on the experience, Jason Aldean shared how meaningful it was to collaborate with one of the artists who inspired his own journey. “Anytime I get the chance to work with someone I’ve looked up to, I take it,” he said.
Although the two had performed together in the past, this particular moment felt deeply personal for Aldean. He recalled how Tritt’s path helped him believe in his own. “He was from Georgia. He played bars around Atlanta—just like I did—and seeing him succeed made me feel like I had a shot, too.”
Aldean also mentioned that Tritt’s influence extended into his early career. He used to cover Tritt’s songs in small venues, and after winning a local singing contest with “Help Me Hold On,” he was able to buy his first car.
“What I’ve always loved is how he blends country with Southern rock. I lean toward that rock edge too,” Aldean added. “It’s been 25 years since he released ‘Great Day to Be Alive,’ and when my manager asked if I wanted to bring him out, I didn’t hesitate. We’ve played together before, but tonight was special—he’s one of my all-time favorites.”
Tritt returned the admiration, sharing how their connection has endured over the years, dating back to their first shared CMA Fest performance in 2015.
“I think we ought to make this a tradition—every ten years, come back and do CMA Fest together,” Tritt said with a laugh. “It’s always such a blast, and the fans here are incredible.”
He also reflected on Aldean’s rise from aspiring artist to star, saying their bond goes back to long before Aldean’s breakout hits. In addition to CMA Fest appearances, the two toured together in 2022, strengthening their friendship along the way.
“Touring with Jason was a great time,” Tritt recalled. “We had a blast out there. I hope we get to do more shows together. He’s one of those artists I see walking a similar path.”
