Carrie Underwood’s iconic hit ignites an unforgettable showdown between Lauren Anderson and Makenzie Phipps on The Voice.

Reba remarked that Carrie Underwood would likely be proud of how they performed her hit song.
Lauren Anderson and Makenzie Phipps wowed the audience with a soulful performance of Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” during The Voice Battles, forcing coach Snoop Dogg into a difficult decision between the two standout contestants.
Both singers delivered their unique interpretations of the chart-topping hit, commanding the stage with confidence and energy — even getting Snoop up and dancing along. The performance also captivated fellow coaches Niall Horan and Michael Bublé, who were clearly entertained, with Bublé grinning throughout and Horan enthusiastically playing air drums.
Horan admitted he was relieved not to be the one making the final call.
“I love a good, classic Voice battle — that’s exactly what that was,” he said. “Makenzie, you completely reimagined the song in your own way, kept it cool, and hit some unbelievable notes. And Lauren, you’re such a powerhouse. That scream — wow! Bublé and I looked at each other like, ‘what just happened?’ I honestly don’t even know how to choose between you two. It was 50/50 — absolutely incredible job, ladies.”
Reba McEntire also had high praise for both singers, saying she was confident that Carrie Underwood herself would be proud of their renditions.
“You ladies are incredible vocalists and performers — you give it your all and truly commit,” McEntire said. “Carrie doesn’t sing easy songs, and I know she’d be thrilled with what you just did. Lauren, you came out strong right from the start, and Mackenzie, your performance was excellent too. I’m so proud of both of you, but if I had to make the call, I’d probably go with Lauren.”
Michael Bublé echoed Reba’s sentiment, agreeing with her decision.
“Mackenzie, your voice is beautiful — smooth, sweet, and completely on point. There’s really nothing to critique,” he said. “But Lauren, you brought such dynamic energy. You were performing, then suddenly you spun around, and I just went, ‘whoa.’ I’d have to lean toward Lauren because of that bold, powerful moment.”
In the end, it was Snoop Dogg who had the final say on who would move forward.
“Mackenzie, you’re a superstar,” he told her. “Everything about you — your voice, your movement, your confidence — it all works. I just love hearing you talk; you remind me of Reba. You’re going to inspire so many people from Bluefield, Virginia, after what you did tonight.”
Turning to Lauren, he added, “That was such a powerful performance. From the moment you stepped on stage, you brought fire — and I loved how you supported your sister up there. That sense of sisterhood means everything to me. You showed exactly why you’re such a strong vocalist. Thank you for that.”
