The 61st Academy of Country Music Awards ended on a high note as Blake Shelton delivered one of the evening’s standout performances in tribute to legendary Nashville songwriter Don Schlitz, who died on April 16, 2026, at the age of 73 after a sudden illness.
The emotional tribute featured Shelton performing The Gambler, the iconic hit made famous by Kenny Rogers and written by Schlitz. As Shelton appeared onstage, glowing neon lights filled the arena, embracing the vibrant spirit of Las Vegas and creating the perfect atmosphere for the ACM Awards finale.
Dressed for the occasion, Shelton strummed his guitar and delivered a powerful rendition of the classic tune, drawing fans and fellow artists to their feet as they sang along through the final chorus.
Originally released on November 15, 1978, as the title track of Rogers’ album The Gambler, the song became a massive success, topping country charts and earning crossover popularity on mainstream pop charts.
Ahead of the performance, Shelton reflected on the lasting impact the song has had on him, describing it as one of country music’s most important recordings and placing it among his personal all-time favorites.
Shelton had previously recorded his own version of “The Gambler” in 2006 while collaborating with producer Bobby Braddock. In honor of the ACM tribute, he also released a fresh cover of the song exclusively through Amazon Music.
The Oklahoma-born singer, who is currently performing a Las Vegas residency, closed out the awards show with a heartfelt performance celebrating the enduring legacy of both Schlitz and Rogers.
Shelton’s residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace is scheduled to continue with additional performances on May 21 and May 24.
